Why Strength Training is Important in Midlife
Do you ever feel like your body isn’t as strong or toned as it used to be, even though you haven’t changed your routine? That’s midlife for you. From our 40s onwards, women naturally lose muscle mass yearly, making us feel weaker, softer, and more prone to aches and pains. The good news? You can change this, and it doesn’t require hours in the gym.
Why Does Strength Training Matter
Strength training (sometimes called resistance training) is a powerful tool for midlife women, but it’s often overlooked. Here’s why it matters:
Boosts metabolism: Muscle is an active tissue. The more you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest.
Protects bones: Lifting weights or resistance bands helps keep bones strong, lowering the risk of osteoporosis.
Supports hormones: Strength training improves insulin sensitivity and reduces midlife belly fat.
Confidence & energy: Feeling strong physically translates into feeling more capable and energised in everyday life.
Practical Tips
Not sure where to start? Here are some simple ways to incorporate strength training into your week:
Bodyweight basics: Squats, push-ups against a wall or countertop, and glute bridges are all great ways to start.
Use resistance bands. They are Affordable, portable, and joint-friendly, great for arms, legs, and core work.
Start small: 10–15 minutes, 2–3 times per week is enough to see benefits.
Mix it in: Add a “movement snack”, like a set of squats while the kettle boils or a plank before bed.
Progress slowly: Once moves feel easy, add light weights (water bottles or dumbbells) to keep challenging your muscles.
This Week's Challenge
Why not choose one strength move (like squats, wall push-ups, or resistance band rows) and do two sets of 10, three times this week? Notice how much stronger you feel in just a short time.
Strength training isn’t about getting bulky, it’s about protecting your body, boosting your energy, and feeling more confident as you move through midlife. What’s one strength move you’d like to try this week? Hit reply and let me know, I’d love to cheer you on.
